This week saw Labour Day celebrated in Morocco with a public holiday on May 1.
Not celebrated in the UK but celebrated in many other countries this event marks the achievements of workers; particularly regarding the standard length of a working day. Morocco participates in these celebrations.
The day is quieter than many of the other public holidays with little going on at a local level. However, marches and demonstrations in the major cities are held to mark the event. This year the workers took to the streets of Casablanca and Rabat in their thousands as unemployment is a current issue right across Morocco. Morocco is however used to demonstrations and marches and they are nearly always peaceful although the presence of large numbers of people always means that there is a security presence.
