Marrakech; Best Destination in Africa
The World Travel Awards are the travel industry awards for all things to do with travel. In the past the African section of the awards has been dominated by South Africa with Cape Town winning best destination in Africa for 12 out of the past 15 years. Cape Town's dominance was only interrupted by Sharm El Sheikh in 2004 and 2007.
This year it was time for something different. The Medina of Marrakech won Best Destination in Africa against a shortlist that included, Cape Town, Victoria Falls, Luxor, Kruger National Park and Durban. Marrakech now qualifies for Leading World Destination against a shortlist that includes, London, New York, Sydney, Rio de Jeneiro, Las Vegas and Istanbul.
Even if Marrakech doesn't win the final award this is a significant moment for the Moroccan government who have worked tirelessly to promote tourism to key destinations in Morocco. Marrakech welcomes tourists with open arms and the majority of residents are friendly to foreign visitors and a special force of tourist police ensure that tourists are available to offer advice and support when necessary.
There was one other award won by Marrakech in the World Travel Awards. Africa's Leading Hotel was awarded to the Royal Mansour Hotel, Marrakech. Congratulations to the Royal Mansour. A night's stay at the Royal Mansour may not be within reach of many tourists in Marrakech but for a special treat we can recommend a drink in one of the two luxury bar areas. It's essential to dress appropriately but the experience is enjoyable and memorable and located at the end of the street it is just a short five minute walk from Riad Al-Bushra. Very handy for a quick journey back.
